Khao Lak  Detailed interactive location map

Located on the beautiful Andaman coastline, Khao Lak remains an unspoilt piece of paradise and the gateway to some of Thailand’s most beautiful natural treasures.

As the region hardest hit during the devastating 2004 tsunami, Khao Lak has made an amazing recovery. Not only are tourist arrivals slowly returning to pre-tsunami levels, but visitors are also rediscovering Khao Lak and its untouched beauty.
Conveniently situated 80 kilometres north from Phuket International Airport, Khao Lak is a quieter alternative to larger destinations such as Phuket and Koh Samui.
The beach itself is actually comprised of three individual beaches, while the far northern end features a network of sandy beach trails. Meanwhile, the coastline is set against Casuarinas pines and palm groves, interspersed with lakes as well as rubber and cocoa plantations.
Towering over the coast are the forested hills of Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park. Located within the park is Khao Lak Mountain where the Chao Pho Khao Lak Shrine sits. In fact, ‘Khao Lak’ is Thai for ‘mountain by the sea’. The Namtok Ton Chong Fa waterfall is also located in this National park and runs all year around, leaving its surroundings blissfully calm and cool. The National Park also provides scenic views over the sea cliffs, hills and beaches.
Dive-enthusiasts who visit Khao Lak can also make an easy passage to The Similian Islands National Marine Park, which boasts some of the world’s most amazing underwater sightseeing at depths down to 30 metres. Also within reach to the North West, is the Surin Islands National Marine Park which is perfect for hiking as well as snorkeling and diving.
Khao Lak offers guests a wide array of accommodation options, ranging from intimate Thai-style cottages and bungalows through to luxurious upmarket hotel resorts with priceless views of the sea and surrounding forests. Currently, 3,000 rooms are being offered at Khao Lak, while many more are being planned or restored, which is a testament to Khao Lak’s resilience and popularity as a destination.

Sports & Activities Khao Lak

Golf

Tap La Mu Royal Navy Golf Course - This unique golf course is located right at one of Khao Lak's most beautiful bays, about 1 hour drive North of Phuket Airport and only a short drive from the beach resorts away. The course is owned by the Royal Thai Navy and has been upgraded to 18 holes during summer 2002. Only since that time the course has been opened for the public.

Diving

Similan Islands Marine National Park  [ Andaman Sea ]
The Similans can certainly lay claim to being one of Asia's top dive destinations with over 20-30 different dive sites. East-facing dive sites feature gently sloping reefs and drop-offs with impressive gardens of sea anemones, flourishing hard and soft corals, and teeming fish populations. Western dive sites are quite the opposite. Here, giant granite boulders tumble down to the seabed to depths of 40m or more. Strong currents keep the gaps between the boulders free from build-ups of sand, leading to the development of a network of tunnels, archways and caverns that provide exciting swimthroughs. The currents also provide nutrients for masses of gorgonians, crinoids, sea fan and lush soft corals. Pelagic fish such as whale shark, reef shark, manta, eagle rays, barracuda, tuna and jacks are frequently observed.
